Does my photo get uploaded to a server?
No. The AI model is downloaded to your browser once (typically 5–20 MB depending on the model) and then all inference happens locally on your device. Your photo data never leaves your machine. This is verifiable — open the browser’s DevTools Network tab while processing an image and you will see no outbound upload requests.
What file formats are supported?
For input: JPG, PNG, and WebP are all accepted. For output: always PNG, because PNG is the primary format that supports a transparent alpha channel (which is required to show a removed background). JPEG does not support transparency — saving a transparent image as JPEG would fill the transparent areas with white. Some browsers also support transparent WebP, which the tool may offer as an additional download option.
How accurate is the background removal?
Accuracy depends heavily on the image. For portraits against a simple background, or products on a plain white surface, the result is typically excellent — clean edges, minimal artifacts. Challenging cases include:
- Fine hair strands — the AI estimates a soft edge but may not capture every individual strand
- Transparent objects (glass, water, plastic) — the model may partially retain the background visible through the object
- Very similar colors between foreground and background — the model has less signal to distinguish them
- Complex cluttered backgrounds — more chance of retaining background elements near edges

What is the maximum image size?
The browser-based model processes images internally at a fixed resolution (typically 512×512 pixels). The mask is then upscaled back to the original image dimensions. The tool accepts images up to roughly 4096 × 4096 pixels. Images above this are automatically downscaled before processing — processing them at the native resolution would exceed browser memory limits. For print-quality output, use the highest-resolution source that fits within this limit.
Can I remove backgrounds from multiple images at once?
The current version processes images one at a time. Drag and drop the next image after downloading the previous result. Batch processing (queue multiple images) is a planned feature. For high-volume batch work, command-line tools designed for batch ML inference offer an efficient alternative.
Why is the output always PNG?
JPEG compression is lossy and — more importantly for this use case — JPEG does not support an alpha (transparency) channel. A transparent background requires a format that can store per-pixel opacity. PNG is the universal standard for this. WebP also supports transparency and produces smaller files; some output options may include WebP. If you need JPEG output (for file size reasons), place the cut-out on a white background first, then save as JPEG.
